On the outside, these two apples look the same. One was complimented and loved. The other was bullied and put-down. Look at their insides.
The Step Inside Thinking Routine allows us to better understand another perspective. In this example, we stepped inside Chrysanthemum the mouse from "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes. We thought about what Chrysanthemum saw, thought, wondered, and felt during the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
While reading Chrysanthemum, we crinkled the heart each time she was bullied. At the end of the story, we tried to smooth her heart out. While the bandaids helped, we could not completely undo the crinkling.
Taking Care Thursday allows me to foster social emotional learning through read aloud!
Be a buddy, not a bully!
Students signed pledges to be a buddy, not a bully!
Students brainstormed qualities of a good friend.
During the first week of school, students wrote about their fears/worries. Then, we threw them away and put them behind us!
