Plickers at the beginning or end of a lesson are one of the many ways I formatively assess my students and guide my future instruction. Plickers is a powerfully simple tool that allows teachers to collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. Each student has a card with a QR code on it, which is linked to their name in my Plickers app. The students turn their card a certain direction based on the choice they are selecting as their answer to a multiple choice question. The question is projected on the front board, and I scan the students cards with my phone from anywhere in the room. The students can see when their card has been scanned. After scanning, I reveal the class graph which shows the number of students who answered correctly and incorrectly. Students cannot see who selected which answer, but I can see all of that data on my phone or laptop and use it to guide future instruction!

Windshield Checks allow students to take ownership for their learning and self-assess their understanding.

Red, yellow, and green cups are used to encourage students to problem solve. Rather than immediately jumping out of their seat, they are to place their cups on the corner of their desk and wait for assistance. If they do not need any help, their green cup sits on top. If they have a question, but it is not urgent, yellow goes on top. If they have a question that is keeping them from moving on with their work, then their red cup is to be on top. I scan the room and address red cups first, then yellow, and check in with everyone working with a green cup as well. The cups are great because they can be seen easily from my small group table!

Thumbs up/down & agree/disagree paddles make for quick and easy formative assessment checks!
Around Halloween time, my students stuck their exit tickets on a spider web as they thought about what "stuck" with them!
